The 3rd Surdo (Surdo de Terceira) is typically the smallest and highest-pitched of the three Surdos used in a samba school Bateria (samba percussion orchestra). In addition to reinforcing the main beats played by the 1st surdo, the 3rd Surdo performs syncopated patterns that are fundamental to the Bateria's groove. It also plays variations that interact with the other percussion instruments and complement the melody of the samba.

In this course, you'll learn the fundamentals of playing the 3rd Surdo in the traditional style of Rio de Janeiro's samba schools. Topics include how to position and tune the drum, the basic strokes, foundational playing techniques, several basic patterns and typical variations, how to develop an authentic samba swing, and how to create an arrangement for a song.
